Signs in the Heavens

The but big news today is the 1999 Leonid meteor shower. Experts are predicting a big storm on November 18th with up to 100,000 shooting stars per hour. (Other predictions place the maximum meteor storm in 2000 or 2001). A Leonid meteor shower happens every year around November 17 when Earth passes close to the orbit of comet Temple-Tuttle. Usually not much happens. A typical Leonid meteor shower consists of a meager 10 to 20 shooting stars per hour. However, every 33 years something special happens. Comet Temple-Tuttle swings through the inner solar system and brings a dense cloud of debris with it. When this happens, there can be 1000s of shooting stars per hour.

Meteor showers are small, but Meteor storms are huge. Meteor showers produce a few to a few hundred shooting stars per hour. Meteor storms produce a few thousand to a few hundred thousand meteors per hour. A meteor storm, like a total solar eclipse, ranks as one of Nature's rarest and most beautiful wonders.

Could this be a sign in the Heavens? Not necessarily, but considering its arrival at the same time of so many other unique signs in the heavens, one has to wonder -- especially since the best viewing of the phenomonum is in Israel. We do know from the Book of the Revelation that some day a meteor will plow into the ocean. Could there be a larger fragment hidden in the debris? No one knows. We will just have to trust God is able to take care of His own and not worry. Isn't it an interesting coincidence that the NASA's Hubble Space Telescope just happened to suffered a system failure over the weekend that will leave it unable to transmit any pictures to Earth until the next, much-delayed, space shuttle mission, the space agency said on Monday.

Signs on the Earth

Meanwhile, on the earth we continue to experience once in a lifetime events.

Hurricane Lenny is bearing down on Puerto Rico currently just 120 miles south of San Juan. This is a Category three hurricane, with its 150 mph winds. What is unusual is that it was formed vary late in the season and is traveling on an unusual west-to-east course. This the largest late-season hurricane in history (since records were kept 125 years ago). Those factors surprised forecasters. "It's unheard of," said veteran meteorologist John Tewey on San Juan's WOSO-AM radio, "This is a once-in-a-lifetime event."

Another once-in-a-lifetime event. We also have several 7.0 earthquakes in a short period of time -- a significant occurrence and one that speaks of God's continued pleading for repentance.

On Mon Nov 15,1999, AP reported that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 struck the seabed of the Indian Ocean Monday. The quake was centered 850 miles southeast of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, an observatory statement said. The tremor was felt only slightly in Colombo, and no damage was reported. However, Turkey was not so fortunate. A major earthquake with magnitude of 7.2 struck just northwest of Ankara, Turkey, Friday, November 10th at 6:57 p.m. local time, the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center reported. This earthquake was located about 70 miles east of the magnitude 7.4. Friday's quake was less catastrophic than the August quake that killed 17,000 people and injured another 50,000. However, the latest quake claimed 600 lives, destroyed hundreds of buildings, and left thousands of homeless shivering in the cold.

A fairly strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 jolted northern Japan Monday, November 15th. The earthquake slightly swayed office buildings in Tokyo, but it was most strongly felt in northwestern cities, including Ofunato in Miyagi, 250 miles, north of Tokyo, and Morioka in Iwate Prefecture, 290 miles north of the capital.

Earthquakes are continuing to grow in severity and diversity. Recent Activity includes:

On Monday, September 20, 1999, a powerful earthquake struck Taiwan. This one had a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 and struck Taiwan before dawn on Tuesday. It knocked out power and collapsed buildings. A tsunami warning (Tidal Wave) was issued. Over 1,000 people have been killed and 3,500 injured, however, many more are trapped in buildings and the death toll wasexpected to rise.

On September 8, 1999 there was a Strong earthquake registering 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Athens Greece on Tuesday. At least 30 people died, and nearly 100 were reported missing. More than 100 buildings crumbled and power and telephone service was out in many places of this city of more than five million.

On August 26, 1999 an earthquake, with a magnitude of six on the open-ended Richter scale, shook provinces in the central and southern Philippines Thursday, causing mild panic but there were no reports of casualties or damage, officials said.

On August 29, 1999 a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck western and central Japan.

On August 17, 1999 a quake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit the San Francisco area, but fortunately there were no immediate reports of damage or injury, officials said. (This may have been a warning to repent before judgement, in accordance with Jude verses 3-8, is measured out.

On August 17,1999, a massive earthquake struck at the heart of Turkey's most populated cities killing many thousands of people Tall buildings and homes collapsed. The National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo. revised its estimate of the quake's magnitude upward to 7.8, making it nearly as powerful as the 7.9-magnitude San Francisco quake, which killed 700 people in 1906.

On Thu Aug 12,1999, a strong earthquake rocked parts of central Indonesia. It was a magnitude 6 earthquake struck centered beneath the Maluku Sea, about 200 miles east of the Central Sulawesi capital of Palu, said Rasyid, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Jakarta.

On Wed Aug 11,1999 a series of earthquakes and aftershocks jolted large parts of the Mideast and western Mediterranean islands, including Iran and Cyprus, where quakes with preliminary magnitudes of 4.2 and 5.8 were reported.

Also on Wed Aug 11,1999 a moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.2 shook Tokyo and the port city of Yokohama.

GEN 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

"You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains." (Matthew 24:6-8)

JUD 1:3-8 "Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ. But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own habitation, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.

HAG 2:7 I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,' says the LORD Almighty.

ROM 8:20-23 "For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. And not only they, but we also who have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
