Jesus Recognized as Messiah

Art Work by Bill Cristman, (c) 1993

This is part three of a multi-part series dealing with the nation of Israel. In this issue, we will be discussing the soon-to-come invasion of Israel by Russian-led and Russian-armed Muslim forces. It is a pivotal event in end-times prophesy that shows the whole world that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the one true God. It also marks the beginning of the spiritual rebirth of Israel, which may indicate the beginning of the end of the Gentile Age -- an event of particular interest to you and me. But to fully understand the events of today, we need to go back to April 6, 32 A.D., and join Jesus as He makes His triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

Jesus Recognized as the Messiah of Israel

``As Jesus approached Jerusalem, a very great multitude spread garments on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed Him cried out, saying: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the Highest.''(Mattew 21:8-9)

As we discussed last time, ``Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord'' is part of the Hallel which was chanted by the pilgrims during the climactic water-pouring ceremony on the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles (Succot). It was a day of prayer, rejoicing and great expectancy for the speedy appearance of the Messiah. The multitudes on the road that day recognized their king riding into Jerusalem on a donkey (in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9) and cried out ``Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.''

Jesus Rejected by the Leaders of Israel

But the leaders of Israel, threatened with loss of power and authority over the people of Israel, rejected His claim and plotted to have Him killed. Jesus exposed the wickedness of their hearts: ``...Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous.....You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? Therefore I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.'' (Matt 23:15-26)

Jesus exposed their wickedness and prophesied that their blood guilt would come upon them in their own generation. Judgment would not only fall on the leaders of Israel, but on the entire nation (God judges a nation for the sins of its leaders - see the Jan-Feb, 1994 issue). To make matters worse, when Jesus appeared before Pilate a few days later, the people (who were blindly following their leaders) called down a blood curse upon themselves: ``When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. `I am innocent of this man's blood', he said. `It is your responsibility!' All the people answered, `Let his blood be on us and on our children!"(Matthew27:24-25)

And so it was. In the year 70 A.D., Jerusalem and the temple was burned, and so totally destroyed that literally `not one stone was left upon another.' The Jewish nation ceased to exist as its people were scattered to the four corners of the earth.

Jesus saw their future destruction. ``As He approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace -- but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God's coming to you.'' (Luke 19:41-44)

Jesus clearly held them accountable to recognize the day of their messianic visitation. How sad that the majority of the Jews could not discern the signs of the times for themselves, but chose to blindly follow their corrupt leaders. They had all the prophesies concerning the coming Messiah. Many were eye-witnesses to the many miracles and deliverances wrought by Jesus. Most importantly, they knew the very clear prophesy from Daniel, chapter nine, that predicted the exact day that the Messiah would be presented to Israel: ``Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Messiah, the Prince, comes, there will be seven `sevens', and sixty-two `sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a wall, but in times of trouble.'' The idiom, a `seven', refers to a week of years and was used to describe a ``Sabbath for the land'' (the land was to lay fallow every seventh year). ``Messiah the Prince'' is ``The Anointed One, the Ruler'' or in Hebrew, ``Meschiach Nagid''.

On March 14, 445 B.C., Artaxerxes Longimanus issued the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. The Jewish and Babylonian calendars used a 360-day year. The angel Gabriel told Daniel that there would be 69 weeks of years between the command to rebuild Jerusalem until the presentation of Messiah the King, which is exactly 173,880 days (69 * 7 *360). Therefore exactly 173,800 days from March 14, 445 BC), we will see the Messiah presented to the nation Israel as king. We can predict the day of the Messiah's appearance on today's calendar by going forward 173,880 days from March 14, 445 B.C., which brings us to April 6, 32 A.D. as follows:

3/14/445 B.C. to 3/13/32 AD = 476 years (no year zero)

476 years * 365 days per year = 173,740 days

days for leap years = 116 days

March 14 - April 6, 32 AD = 24 days

Grand Total = 173,880 days.

Jesus Christ avoided the attempts of the people to crown Him king, but on April 6, 32 A.D. Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey (in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9). He was presented as Meschiach Nagid, Messiah the Prince, on the exact day predicted in Gabriel's prophesy. And the multitudes along the road recognizing Him as Messiah, shouted in exultation ``Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.''

But the vast majority of Israel missed the time of their messianic visitation. The Jews who had spilled blood in the land and defiled the land with idols were about to be judged by God (Eze 39:23, Eze 36:17-19). And just 38 years later, Israel was cut off. They were no longer under His protective covering. And without God's protection, Israel has been under attack by the Prince of this world -- Satan. They have been persecuted throughout the centuries; in the great Inquisitions, by the Russian Lenin, and by Hitler and the Nazis.

Today the persecution and anti-Semitism continues to escalate world-wide from Muslim anti-Israel hate groups like the Hamas, to the rise of Neo-Nazi violence in Germany (where swastikas have been smeared on Dachau cemetery graves), to anti-semitic thought in Italy and even Neo-Nazi computer video games (where you get points by baking Jews in ovens, making them into soft soap or dispatching them via airmail to Israel). The Jews have experienced horrific atrocities and the persecution will continue until Messiah comes.

Isaiah declared that a remnant would survive, that they would trust in the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and that they would return to their land after God's righteous judgment. ``In that day the remnant of Israel, the survivors of the house of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who struck them down but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God. Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand by the sea, only a remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous.''(Isa 10:20-22)

So, although God hid His face from them and removed his protective covering, He is not finished with Israel; for in the fullness of the Gentile Age, all Israel will be saved. ``I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written: ``The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob. And this is my covenant with them when I take away their sins.''(Romans 11:25-27).

This is an exciting passage of scripture. It tells us when to expect the ``fullness of the Gentile Age''; that is, when the partial hardening is removed. God will remove their heart of stone. ``I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh."(Eze 36:26) And following this softening, God will ``...pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son."(Zec 12:10) The Jews will receive Jesus as Messiah, Lord and Savior.

How interesting that the passage in Zechariah 12:10, written eight centuries before the birth of Christ, contains a clear reference to ``the one whom they pierced.'' And in the 13th chapter of Zechariah, we find that the One that defends Jerusalem has wounds in His hands: ``And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.'' (Zec 13:6).

The time is coming when the Jews will recognize Jesus as Messiah. The Jews will cry out to God: ''...I will praise you, O LORD. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.'' With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation."(Isa 12:1-3) (Salvation in Hebrew is ``Yeshua'' or in the Greek ``Jesus'') And all Israel will be saved. They will join those believers from April 6, 32 A.D. by crying out: ``Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord'', which will set the stage for the second coming of Jesus Christ. For Jesus told the Scribes and Pharisees: ``I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.''(Matthew 23:39)

God will take their hearts of stone and give them hearts of flesh. There will be a softening of their hearts. God will pour out His Spirit on the house of Jacob, and Israel will be saved. These events all occur after the invasion of Israel. As we shall demonstrate, the stage is now being set for this end-times invasion.

The Invasion of Israel - Setting the Stage

God continues to execute His plan for the redemption of the earth. Although He may tarry, because He is not willing that any will perish, the Lord will return in judgement at the appointed time. ``The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is long suffering towards us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance''(2 Peter 3:9)

Part of God's end-time plan is judgment upon the ``kingdom of the north'' and the invading Muslim forces. But before the invasion can occur, the Jews must be back in the land. And as we have discussed in previous newsletters, Israel was reestablished as a country after almost 2,000 years in dispersion, on the exact day predicted by scripture -- May 14, 1948. The Jews regained control of Jerusalem on June 7, 1967 -- the exact day predicted by scripture. And today God's plan continues to unfold. Today there remains much turmoil in the land of Israel, but we have entered a period where the Jews are seeking peace. Peace with the PLO, peace with Jordan, peace with Syria. And we know from that when the Jews cry ``peace and safety, then sudden destruction will come upon them.''(1 Thes 5:3) But lost amidst the coverage of the ongoing peace process are God's continuing plans to call His children home.

God declares: ``I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number.''(Jer 23:3) This has already occurred with the re-establishment of Israel. Then the Lord amplifies His promise in verses seven and eight, telling us what to expect next: ``So then, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when people will no longer say, As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt, but they will say, As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them. Then they will live in their own land.''(Jer 23:7-8) And this exodus from the "kingdom of the north" and the other countries is occurring today.

It is not difficult to determine the identity of the ``kingdom of the north''. Simply get a globe of the world and draw a line due north from Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. You will find that the line exactly intersects Moscow, the capital of the kingdom of the north. The Word of God is incredibly accurate!

Exodus II has begun. The Jews have been leaving Russia and returning to Israel in record numbers. In 1990, nearly as many Soviet Jews returned home as had arrived since Israeli independence in 1948 -- about 200,000. In December of 1992, it was reported that 75% of the remaining 1.6 million Soviet Jews had applied for official permission to emigrate. (The reasons at the time were the rise of Muslim fundamentalism in the republics of Central Asia and the fear of a right-wing coup in Moscow).

And the Aliya (Israeli immigration under the Law of Return) continues today as hyper-inflation in Russia, gross scarcities of food and clothing and continued anti-Semitism (as is embodied by the Russian Zhirinovsky who won 25% of the vote in the last election), continues. Here is a sample of Zhirinovski's anti-semitic statements: ``Jews are infecting the nation!'' ``The Jews were to blame for the first two world wars, and it is they themselves who have provoked anti-Semitism.'' ``In Russia today, Jewish children are going to school while our children are hungry. If you elect me I will put a stop to it.'' ``It would be best if they (the Jews) would all go back to Israel.'' It is no wonder that the number of Jews deciding to make Aliya back to Israel is on the rise. Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, the chief Rabbi of Moscow says:

``The recent rise of extreme nationalism in Russia due to the economic situation gives us reason enough to believe that the next president of Russia will be a member of today's opposition. Zhirinovsky or another like him. Therefore, Jews must prepare themselves for the 1996 presidential elections, when Zhirinovsky or someone else in the opposition might prepare. We must hope for the best, but prevail for the worst. I'm the last person among Jews in this country to say it, but I fear that in the long term, there is no future for the Jew here. I think we must begin to prepare our children for lives outside Russia.'' (New York Times, Feb. 5, 1994)

But the Jews are also returning from the other countries of the world, as predicted by Jeremiah. Here are some selected banners from articles in the Jerusalem Post over the last few years: ``Syrian Jews to be Released Soon'', ``Ethiopia's Last Jews Expected Soon - Talks This Week on Immigration of Remaining 2,500'', ``Ethiopian Jewery Rescued - Operation Solomon Flies 14,400 to Israel in 24 Hours'',``Yugoslavian Jews Now Keen to Come'', ``Airlift from Tajikistan Arrives'', ``481 North Americans Last Month'', ``Sarajevo Jews are Desperate'', ``Abkhazi Jews Set for Exodus'', ``Albanian Jews Moved to Israel in Secrecy''.

The Syrian Jews had been in Syria for over 2,300 years. Since 1948, they were trapped in Syria. Those who were granted tourist visas in recent years were forced to leave children and families behind as collateral to insure their return. When Syria finally let some of them leave the country (they were allowed to go anywhere except to Israel), the chief Rabbi and several thousand of his flock emmigrated to the United States. In October of this year, after spending several years in Brooklyn, New York he said it was time to return to Israel. He took his family to Israel and told his flock that if they loved him, they would follow.

It is God himself that will regather the remnant of Israel. First from the kingdom of the north, and then from all the countries of the earth. Jeremiah 16:12-16 reiterates this promise, but gives us additional information to help us pinpoint this event. ``...However, the days are coming,'' declares the LORD, ``when men will no longer say, `As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,' but they will say, `As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.' For I will restore them to the land I gave their forefathers. ``But now I will send for many fishermen,'' declares the LORD, ``and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks.''(Jer 16:12-16)

The first part of their return will occurr during a period of increased Jewish Evangelism as God ``sends in the fishermen.'' This is occurring today. With the opening of the ``Iron Curtain'', Evangelical Christian groups have been pouring into Russia and the other eastern block countries. When they entered, they found such a spiritual void, after almost 70 years of communist oppression, that decisions for Christ are being made in the tens of thousands at public outreach meetings. Many of those who have been saved were Jewish. In this country, Jewish Evangelism is increasing.

Consider the Brighton Beach area of New York City where over 100,000 Soviet Jews settled within a ten-block radius. Sid Roth's Messianic Vision has established a full-time Messianic congregation in this area. They hold Boardwalk outreaches. At a recent violin concert, 40 Russian Jews came to the Lord. There is an incredible openness to the Gospel and indications that several of these converts, who are currently being discipled, are going to become on-fire evangelists for the Lord (reminiscent of the 144,000 Jewish Evangelists of the book of Revelation).

But following this period of world-wide evangelism, God will send in the hunters.. ``For I will restore them to the land I gave their forefathers. But now I will send for many fishermen, declares the LORD, and they will catch them. After that I will send for many hunters, and they will hunt them down on every mountain and hill and from the crevices of the rocks."(Jer 16:15b-16) We will undoubtedly see new Zhirinovsky's who will come to kill, maim and destroy. The only place of refuge left for the non-believing Jew will be Israel. And for those who think a Jew would never want to leave America, read Hosea 11:10: ``...He will roar like a lion. When He roars, then His sons shall come trembling from the west.'' Apparently something will happen in America so terrible that the Jews will leave America and return home, trembling.

So the nation of Israel has come together again and the Jews are in the process of returning home (albeit many in unbelief) -- without spirit. This was forseen by Ezekiel in his famous ``dry bones vision'' described in chapter 37. God tells Ezekiel that: ``..these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off! Therefore prophesy and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, O My people, I will open your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel''(Eze 37:11-12).

Although there is a Messianic revival going on in America and the rest of the world, this is not yet as prevalent in the nation of Israel. In fact, there have been concerted efforts to exile Jews who have been ``born again" and say that Jesus is the Messiah. It is a sad fact that only about 10% of the Jews are even religious. Politically, the main party does not have a clear majority and thus must have support of religious members of the Kinneset. But, on balance, they are not a religious nation. There are many religious fanatics (zealots) and some ultra-orthodox Jews who don't feel the Israeli government should even exist until Messiah comes. But the Jews are coming home. There will be a spiritual rebirth in Israel and the Jews will cry out: ``Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord'', setting the stage for the return of Messiah.

Next time we will cover Ezekiel, chapters 38 and 39, which go into great detail showing the events of that invasion. It involves a Russian invasion, nuclear weapons, judgment upon Russia and upon another nation ``who lives in the safety of the far distant coast lands." (America?) As we shall discover next time, the stage has been set. And this battle could occur at any time. So we should keep the ``oil" in our lamps and be prepared to meet our God.

Jesus is the Light of the World

Last time we discussed what Jesus wrote in the earth and the significance of His proclamation: ``If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.'' When Jesus next spoke to the people, he said, ``I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'' We asked what the significance of this statement is in light of the festival that was going on.

To understand the significance of this statement, we must recognize that Jesus was sitting in the Court of the Woman when they brought the prostitute to Him. And in the Temple, during the Feast of Succot, the pilgrims came to the Temple bearing lights and torches. In the Temple, the golden candlesticks were lighted. Also, four great poles were placed in the court of the woman, each with a light at the top. These lights were very large, each holding eleven baths of oil. The used undergarments of the priests, called swaddling cloths (Jesus was wrapped in swaddling clothes at His birth - a reference to Him being a light to the Gentiles and the salvation of the nation of Israel), were lowered down into these vats and lit. The light from the Temple was so bright that it illuminated most of Jerusalem. It was amidst this backdrop of brilliant light in the Sanctuary of God that Jesus proclaimed Himself to be the Light of the World. Jesus is our sanctuary and our Light. Seek the Lord while it is still light, for the darkness is coming where no one may seek Him.

``The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.'' (Isa 9:2) ``Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you." (Isa 60:1)

``Watch and pray, therefore, that you would be counted worthy to escape the judgment that is coming upon the earth and be able to stand before the Son of Man'' (Luke 21:36).

Are You Willing To Die For The Jewish People?

"I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols. See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you." Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them. Let the desert and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops. Let them give glory to the LORD and proclaim his praise in the islands. The LORD will march out like a mighty man, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies. "For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant. I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands and dry up the pools. I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them. But those who trust in idols, who say to images, 'You are our gods,' will be turned back in utter shame. "Hear, you deaf; look, you blind, and see! Who is blind but my servant, and deaf like the messenger I send? Who is blind like the one committed to me, blind like the servant of the LORD? You have seen many things, but have paid no attention; your ears are open, but you hear nothing." It pleased the LORD for the sake of his right- eousness to make his law great and glorious. But this is a people plundered and looted, all of them trapped in pits or Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life. hidden away in prisons. They have become plunder, with no one to rescue them; they have been made loot, with no one to say, "Send them back." Which of you will listen to this or pay close atten- tion in time to come? Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the LORD, against whom we have sinned? For they would not follow his ways; they did not obey his law. So he poured out on them his burning anger, the violence of war. It enveloped them in flames, yet they did not understand; it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart. But now, this is what the LORD says - he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have re- deemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you, and people in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' and to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth - everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." Lead out those who have eyes but are blind, who have ears but are deaf. All the nations gather together and the peoples assemble. I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' and to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth Which of them foretold this and proclaimed to us the former things? Let them bring in their witnesses to prove they were right, so that others may hear and say, "It is true." "You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me. I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no sav- ior. I have revealed and saved and proclaimed - I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "that I am God. Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?" This is what the LORD says - your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: "For your sake I will send to Babylon and bring down as fugitives all the Babylonians, in the ships in which they took pride. I am the LORD, your Holy One, Israel's Creator, your King." This is what the LORD says - he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. "Yet you have not called upon me, O Jacob, you have not wearied yourselves for me, O Israel. (Isaiah 42:8-43:22)
