The possibilies of some dramatic problems, outside of Biblical prophecy, is highly remote, but given what we know will come upon the earth, these events merit our careful consideration as we store up treasure for heaven.

The U.S. space agency is prepared for a Wednesday morning, October 15, 1997 launch of a controversial nuclear-powered probe to the planet Saturn. Although NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy indicate that the chances of a radioactive release are minimal, protests are mounting. The concern is centered around the generators' fuel supply, which will power the craft during its seven-year journey to Saturn. The generators contain a total of

The odds of a radioactive release are said to be only 1 in 1,400 during the first three and a half minutes after blastoff, and 1 in 476 during the rocket's climb to orbit. The odds of the spacecraft falling to Earth during an August 1999 speed-boosting fly-past of earth are put at 1 in a million.
However, opponents, such as Michio Kaku, a professor of theoretical physics at City University of New York, indicate that nobody really knows what the dangers are. Kahu stated: "I find that the NASA bureaucrats in some sense are living in fantasyland. Pure guesswork has replaced rigorous physics. Many of these numbers are simply made up."
Prophetic Significance:
"The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water -- the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter." (Rev 8:10-11)
In this account, we find the Apostle John describing a prophetic vision. (Rev 1:19) What he sees, he describes as a blazing star which fell to the earth. The name of the star is Wormwood. The result is that a third of the water "turned bitter" and "many people died," presumably from drinking the water.
Why did John, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, feel compelled to tell us the name of the star that fell? The Holy Spirit was giving us a clue to something that we would be able to identify in our day, which probably made no sense to John. The Russian word Chernobyl, translated into English, is Wormwood. Most of us are familiar with the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster that occurred in Russia about 10 years ago. It contaminated hundreds of miles with radioactive fallout. The implication here is that fallout could certainly be a dynamic of God's judgment upon the unregenerate world.
There are several possibilities.
1) A meteor or comet could slam into the earth, polluting the earth's water supplies. I'll deal with the possibility of this happening in a later post.
2) The contamination could be the result of a nuclear exchange, such as the one indicated in the Ezekiel 38/39 invasion of Israel.
3) But there is another possibility, however remote, that John saw the
Cassini Spacecraft crashing into the earth during its August 1999 fly-by. If this were to occur, the 72 pounds of highly radioactive plutonium could be dispersed over a wide area, turning the "waters bitter" due to radioactive contamination, and killing many."And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh."
