A Letter to the American Church

Dear America,

Today is the 8th of November, 2000 and it is the day after the elections and at this hour those elections haven't been settled, yet. Some say Gore will win in the end, some say Bush will ink out a victory in the Electoral College, either way, this election should give rise to concern to many, especially in the Christian community.

I saw a exit-poll that stated that some 35% of Evangelical Christians (so-called) voted for Al Gore for President of the United States. Let us look at that for a moment and actually look at what statements that vote is making to the world. When those Christians voted for Gore, they stated the following; the militant homosexual movement, including same sex marriages are OK and that those homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt children at will, after all, Gore stated his support to both of those issues and more.

They have apparently agreed with Gore in his stance to overwhelmingly support abortion at anytime, including after the partial birth of the child. Also, they have agreed with his militant environmental stances that basically look at plants, trees and frogs and other things of nature to be more worthy of our protection than man, especially unborn man. They have apparently stated that it is ok if a person is dishonest and has no honor, after all everyone does it and really, "It's the economy stupid!". They have stated they want at least another four years of what has gone on in the white house and in government, after all they have more money in their bank accounts now, more than ever. They agree with a party that divides people into ethnic, racial, religious, and other groups, instead of uniting them and sets them against one another. A vote for Gore is a vote for his policies, remember that. I wonder if it is possible to agree with those policies and other stances and still be called a Born-again Christian, I really don't think so.

A friend reminded me of the story of Esau and Jacob from the Old Testament and that

story is a parallel of what is going on with these people, who called themselves Christian. You might remember the Story from the bible, where Esau one day, traded his birth rite and inheritance for a bowl of beans, just because he was hungry one day and let his flesh overload his mind and good sense. Isn't it the same today? Many Christians and others cast their votes and basically trade away their birthright, because they look at their pocket books and bank accounts, instead of their faith and obedience toward God. Isn't that setting up money as your god, I think that it is.

Another problem that I can see is the popular vote and this is really a problem. There was a time in our history when the people of the world would look at Americans and whether they liked us or not, they would say that at heart, Americans are a decent people. I don't think that we can say that anymore or at least not for long. I think that the evil in the country are about to out-number the righteous anytime now. 48% percent of this country, at last count, voted for Gore and another 48% voted for Bush. I am not saying that all those that voted Bush are all righteous, nor am I saying that everyone that voted for Gore is unrighteous, because there are those that vote out of ignorance or out of some sense of stupid party loyalty. That is no excuse though, of course, because if you have received the Holy Spirit, then there is no reason to be unwise, since the Holy Spirit is the Wisdom of God.

We Christians should not call ourselves Republican or Democrat, for we have been called Children of God and we should cast our votes according to our faith in Christ and our obedience to our Father in Heaven. I have also noticed recently (maybe not too recently) that those on the left have really began to hate the right, and vise-versa. This is not good, because Christians are called to pray for the other side and although we can hate the sin, we are commanded to love the sinner, whom Christ died for.

I do not know, who will win the election, but I know who is sitting on the throne. Now, more than ever we Christians are commanded to not only preach the truth, but more importantly, to live the truth in our communities. We must become steadfast and uncompromising in our lifestyles and live the life that Jesus led, my Pastor calls it, living the life of the Saints. This is the only way to save this country. With millions and millions of the unborn, crying out for justice at the throne of the Judge in Heaven, we who are here on earth and are called by His Name must begin to really intercede and to fast for the soul of this nation. I want to say this, Judgment begins at the house of the Lord. Many people look at what is going on and they look at other people and they never look close to home.

The Christian divorce rate is as high as the world's and so is teenage pregnancy and drug use in Christian homes. Just the other day, I talked to a member of a local Methodist Church that has an OPENLY homosexual worship leader at their church. Do we really believe that these things are going to go unnoticed by God in heaven and that He will let these things go unpunished, since we are in a different age than those people in the bible, nonsense! God is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Our Father doesn't desire the death of any sinner, but He does desire that all repent of their sins and receive Christ. We need to look around our lives and make those changes that we know that we need to make and then we need to make those same changes in our Churches. If our lives as Christians are not right according to God's Word, we have no right to preach anything to the world.

Well, I will continue to pray for this country and no matter who wins this election this country is in deep spiritual trouble. I would call for the armies of the Lord, the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus, to kneel before the throne of Grace and ask for forgiveness for ourselves and to begin to live the lives that we know that we all need to live. God bless you all and pray for us, at The Church at Tomball, we are under some fierce attacks.

Yours unworthy Servant,

Pastor Scott Bull
