President Bush's decision Thursday to allow federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, that doesn't involve destroying new embryos, is a mixed blessing at best. Under the plan Bush outlined Thursday, only stem cell lines that already exist (created from embryos already destroyed) can be used in federally funded research. The argument is that for those human embryos that are already dead, since we can't do anything about that anyway, we might as well use the stem cells for research -- and the government will fund it.
The Christian leadership's response to this decision is puzzling to me. We are truly living in an age of deception, just as the Bible foretold.
Focus on the Family leader Dr. James C. Dobson applauded President George W. Bush's decision to uphold current federal law -- which prohibits the federal funding of destructive embryonic stem cell research (Since 1995, Congress has banned the use of federal funds for research that destroys human embryos). The Bush Administration's position will allow federally funded researchers to experiment only with stem cell lines already derived from embryos previously destroyed in private laboratories. Dr. James C. Dobson, president of Focus on the Family, issued the following statement: "President Bush faced tremendous political pressure to betray his pro-life commitment. He has courageously upheld his promise protect unborn children," said Dobson. "He deserves praise from citizens who understand that it is never justified to destroy one life in order to possibly save another." Dobson went on to say, "We grieve for the lives of these embryos," said Dobson. "But we are delighted that the government will not take part in killing any more. Americans who respect human life from conception understand that this type of research oversteps the bounds of morality and ethics -- we breathe a sigh of relief that President Bush has upheld that pro-life policy, and trust that he will continue to do so." Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who supported the funding. Stated: "He's come down on the side of facilitating life."
Even the National Right to Life Committee had praise for the president's compromise:
"We are delighted that President Bush's decision prevents the federal government from becoming a party to any further killing of human embryos for medical experimentation," said Laura Echevarria, the committee's media director, in a statement. "While National Right to Life mourns the loss of life for those embryos from whom stem cell lines have already been derived, nothing the National Right to Life Committee or President Bush can do can restore the lives of those embryos who have already died."
So I guess the message is that it could have been worse so we should rejoice. My Bible says a little leaven leavens the whole loaf.
A leading opponent of the research, Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, said he was "pleased about the limitations that he's put on the research." However, Brownback also said he was "concerned about the breaking of the barrier" by allowing even limited research -- "If [an embryo is] a life, we should treat it as such and not some sort of medical commodity," Brownback said. Brownback's concerns are well-founded, but the ramifications of this decision, go well beyond Brownback's observations.
The precedent that is being set here is as follows: Well, if the moral issue is moot, because the embryo is already dead, then why shouldn't we use it for a good purpose. Consider the ramifications of this decision. For example, abortion is still the law of the land, well, since these babies are dead anyway, shouldn't we use their fetal tissue for research and should not the government fund it fully since they are dead anyway.
Folk's what seems to be a victory, is in reality a trap of the devil seethed in deception. In this decision is the ground work for using euthanised humans (legal in Holland) and aborted babies to feed the grist mills of the manna obsessed medical industry, while at the same time bringing the people of the United States one step closer to God's justice.
Woe to those who call evil (funding stem cell research) good!
"Sheol has enlarged itself and opened its mouth beyond measure; their glory and their multitude and their pomp, and he who is jubilant, shall descend into it. People shall be brought down, Each man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled. But the LORD of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God who is holy shall be hallowed in righteousness. Then the lambs shall feed in their pasture, and in the waste places of the fat ones strangers shall eat. Woe to those who draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as if with a cart rope; that say, "Let Him make speed and hasten His work, that we may see it; and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw near and come, that we may know it." Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Woe to men mighty at drinking wine, woe to men valiant for mixing intoxicating drink who justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away justice from the righteous man! Therefore, as the fire devours the stubble, and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root will be as rottenness, and their blossom will ascend like dust; because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. (Isa 5:14-24)
God will judge a nation for the sins of its leaders. Consider 1 Chronicles, Chapter 21. David, because of his success in battle, came to the point where he felt he was the source of Israel's success. He insisted on numbering his troops, even though he was cautioned by his general to remember that it was God who had won the victories. But David insisted on taking the census of his fighting men. As a result, God gave David a choice of three punishments: God would either bring three years of famine on the land, or three months of fleeing before their enemies, or three days of plague. David chose the latter. As a result of the sins of Israel's leader, 70,000 men died of the plague. God judges sin. He judges nations for their corporate sins and for the sins of their leaders.
God is not slack concerning sin, but is long-suffering, not willing that any should perish (2 Peter 3:7-9). However, God will judge sin. Except for Noah and his family, the Lord once destroyed an entire world because of rampant sin. We have lost sight of the fact that God judges nations for both the sins of the nation and the sins of the nation's leaders. A nation will reap what it sows (Gal 6:7).
Consider Elijah. After winning his confrontation with the prophets of Baal on top of Mt. Carmel, he cried out to God to take him home -- because he thought no one else believed in God but him. God told him he was wrong. God told Elijah that there were 7,000 men left in the nation who loved Him, men who had not bowed their knee to Baal, men of integrity and righteousness. However (notwithstanding the 7,000 righteous in the land), because of the wickedness of Ahab and Jezebel, God's judgement fell. The entire nation (including the 7,000 righteous), went three and one-half years without rain. Just because there are righteous in the land does not mean judgement will not fall. Israel is a powder keg and the events foretold by God through Ezekiel could take place at anytime. When it happens, I am fully persuaded that America is the other nation living in the safety of the far-distant coastlands, that will be judged by God along with the nations who come against Israel. No longer shall she boast in her strength and take delight in the delicacies of her sin and the great deceptions that she perpetrates -- for she shall be humbled and brought low before the coming of the terrible day of the Lord."
Remember, that these embryonic cells are taken out of the womb area of the woman and are God's created living baby cells for a baby that could've had a future and a purpose.
"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. " (Psalm 139:13-16)
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." (Jer 1:5)
"Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in You even at my mother's breast. From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help." (Psa 22:9-11)
"As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things." (Ecc 11:4-6)
This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself." (Isa 44:24)
Isaiah 49:5-6 And now the LORD says-- He who formed me in the womb to be His servant to bring Jacob back to Him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength--He says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth." (Isa 49:5-6)
